Friendly and caring GCSE English Tutor

Why tutor?

Everyone wants to give their children the best education so they can reach their full potential in life. That’s why it’s only natural to want to help if they’re struggling at school or lacking confidence. It can be hard to support them yourself; you might be unfamiliar with the subject or they just don’t want to listen to you because you’re their parent!

Tutoring is NOT about being ‘pushy’ or hot-housing children. There are so many reasons for needing a little extra help: getting to grips with the basics, a little fine-tuning for GCSEs or just a general confidence boost.

Sometimes students (and parents) are confused about what exam questions are actually ‘getting at’. Using in-depth knowledge of the curriculum and current mark schemes together with exemplars and examiners’ reports, I help students understand what assessors are looking for and how to write their responses to maximise marks.

It’s not all about grades. Some students may wish to simply hone their spelling and grammar skills or expand their vocabulary. Any improvement in English is not only useful for other subjects but also throughout life. In today’s hyper-competitive world, college and job applications are judged on their written quality, too.

It’s the one-to-one relationship that really makes tutoring work. ‘One size fits all’ isn’t realistic when it comes to learning. Students often need someone who has the time to really listen to their individual needs. Confidence grows, motivation improves and they have a renewed enthusiasm about their work.

Communication is the key to building a rapport. Empathy and patience are as important as creating lively and interesting lessons. I work hard for your child to make sure they reach their full potential. Every single student has something unique to offer. It’s my job to draw out and build on their strengths. My students often discover a previously unknown love for English and decide to study it further.

Why me?

There are hundreds of agencies out there but I really believe the best results happen when you have the time and space to get to know your students properly. I have two teens of my own and I combine a passion for English with the experience and maturity necessary to get the very best out of every single student.

Adults and C1 Exam

And by the way, I don’t just teach school pupils, I teach adults, too. You might be studying English to improve your job prospects, or you just want to improve your spoken and written skills so you can help support your children. I also teach the C1 exam (formerly the Cambridge Advanced Exam (CAE)) for learners preparing for university or professional life. Whatever your needs, I will tailor lessons just for you.

Flexibility and marking service

Not everyone needs a whole year of GCSE revision with a tutor. You may prefer a few weeks or monthly sessions just to sharpen skills and get up to speed. Some students don’t really need extra lessons outside of school but would benefit from practising exam questions. I offer a marking service providing practice exam questions, giving in-depth and specific feedback on how to boost grades according to the current mark schemes for all the major exam boards.
